Girl vs. Boy

Wednesday

After listening to Boy exhaustively failing at life this morning because he woke up a half hour late, I went through the morning routine and found myself at work early.  Checking my voicemail, I was delighted to find that my boss had an out-of-office meeting until 10:30 a.m.  So, I checked the events calendar to see what was going on; I was in luck.  This morning at 9 a.m. would be a lecture on Lee Friedlander, an influential American photographer.

I used that first hour between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. to get all my work done so that I could attend the lecture guilt-free.  Upon entering the theater, I could tell that it was going to be a great talk, because up on the screen were some of my favorite Friedlander works, including a photo of Miles Davis.  I really didn’t know much about Friedlander as an artist up until this morning.  I was impressed.  The curator was clearly excited about Friedlander’s work and it is always awesome to find people who love their job.  Most curators, even the painfully monotone ones, can make art exciting, merely by allowing the audience to share their joy and enthusiasm.  This guy was no exception and the hour flew by without me checking my watch once.

Outside of that, my late lunch consisted of a nice walk, a trip to the bank (hee hee), and a fruitless stop at my favorite toy store.

your job sounds like awesomeness. you should write about it all the time. i love reading about other people’s cool jobs.

I wasn’t “hating” life. I was just saying I’ve failed at it. I still like it, I just don’t do it very well

As I misquoted Boy, I have fixed the entry. And yes, my job is awesome and I do love that I get to attend lectures and artist talks. The best is when we have the actual artist here, of course, but sometimes they lack the genuine love for their work that curators have. There is something special about caring so deeply about another’s work that you choose to study it. Most of the curators here fully immerse themselves in the work of the artists. It’s a crazy business, this art world.

so tell me about your responsibilities at the museum. i want to know what they pay you for.

I have three main areas of responsibility:
1. Executive Assistant Stuff – set up meetings, fix problems, make spreadsheets, research data, sort the mail and answer the telephone for my boss (who is, I must say, pretty awesome – she’s honest and fair and tells it like it is – there is always the minor stuff that is certain to annoy me for small amounts of time, but overall, she’s great)
2. Accounting Stuff – I am basically working as an accountant for a gallery we operate in another part of the city – this involves accounts receivable, some accounts payable, and banking transactions. This is the part of my job that takes up most of my time, as it is the newest part of my job. Once I get it down, it won’t take up all of my time. But, it keeps me busy, and that keeps me happy.
3. Finance Stuff – I am also the main contact for the Finance Department, which means handling all inquiries from outside as well as inside. I try to keep most inquiries away from anyone else in the department. This is the section that gives me the most headaches because I have to know a ridiculous amount of information or else be constantly asking the same questions of my co-Finance people. And that would be annoying for both them and me.
That’s basically it.
