Girl vs. Boy

Simplifying Life: Tip #34 – Socks

Posted by: orboy on: April 29, 2008

Throw away all of your socks.  Throw them all away and buy new ones.  When you get new socks, make sure they’re all the same.  This will greatly simplify laundry day. It means that at no point in time will you ever have more than one sock without a match, and it would be impossible to mistakenly come to work/school with mismatching socks.

I’ve done this… mostly. I own only two kinds of socks with some exceptions (such as my awesome-warm wool socks).  I have white socks and I have black socks.  All of them are the same.  If I have two black socks, I have two matching black socks. Same applies to my white socks.

Doing this has served me well over the years, though something happened recently for which I was not prepared.  Girl started stealing and hording my socks!  Suddenly I found myself without enough black socks to make it through the week.  Now what?  I had to go out and get more… and therein lies the problem.  Could I find the same sock again?!?

Luckily Hanes has been faithfully producing the same exact sock for who knows how many years now so I was able to find a pack of the kind I use.  As an extra precaution, I picked up some new white socks too – just in case.

That small complication aside, if you’re in a position to not be picky about your socks, I’d recommend doing this.

Allow me to disagree, honey (pretty please?)… While it is wonderful to have all matching socks, not all your black socks match. At some point, you must have bought a batch of non-same black socks, because they are the ones I really like and thus, have stolen them all. So, while your ignorance can be used as a dismissive tool for the above post, had I not stolen my favorite socks, your matching theory would not work as you had multiple types of black socks (unless the black socks I like were purchased prior to your matching socks rule)… Also, and this is probably a Girl thing, black loses its color (or lack of color) with every wash, making some socks seem grey and therefore, nonmatching. I usually keep the darker socks and throw the lighter socks back in your bin for you to wear, as I prefer to have as true-to-matching socks as possible.

I need to throw those socks away. They’re drifters from a past life.

What socks? I don’t know what you’re talking about. ALL of your socks match. No more of these foolish ideas I have about non-matching socks. I am wrong.*

*All of the above may be lies used to stop Boy from throwing away my favorite socks.
